Charlotte squatted down at the water, swishing it back and forth. She hummed an old melody, a tune only someone Deacon's age would recognize. She hugged her doll close, her dark eyes looking down in the water. She watched a mermaid swim back and forth. She caught her eye and the mermaid quickly swam away in fear. She couldn't cross the water; everyone knows spirits can't cross the water.
"Daddy?" She asked, looking up as she heard something moving. She moved towards the wolf there, her arms out to catch it. It whined and darted back into the woods. She made her way back up the hill, her dark eyes looking around. "Daddy? Daddy.." She called, peeking in between the trees. "Mommy? Daddy? Come out and play with me. Mommy..? Mommy?"

Devon rubbed at his bleeding arm some, frowning when his stomach growled. He hadn't eaten actual food, or anything else all day and night, and it had been nearly a week since he'd fed on living flesh.
He didn't understand the things he did wrong though, ducked under a branch before looking down at the water, watching figures swimming there. Maybe a dangerous place for most, but he would never follow one without a fight.

Charlotte looked back at Devon, her head tilted to the side quizzically. It was almost as if she were mocking him. She walked over to him, bending down to see what he was looking at. "Daddy?" She asked, looking up at him, her dark eyes staring into his. She climbed into his arms, hugging her doll close. "Are you my daddy? Why'd you leave me, daddy?" She asked, looking up at him again. She hugged the doll tightly, her head tilted to the side.

Devon tensed, easing up curiously. He found no iterest in her though, she was nothing he could feed on . If anything she was a somewhat familiar face. "I'm Devon.." He murmured. "Not Daddy..." He put her down warily, his own head tilting for a moment. Finalky breaking the gaze, he tugged off his hoodie, leathery wings tearing through his back. Once they were out, he relaxed some.

"No." She said, trying to climb back up into his arms. But she couldn't. She wrapped her arm around his leg, the other holding her doll. She was small, even for six. She was only about as big as a four year old, so she only came up to mid Devon's thigh. She looked out at the water, sticking a bare foot in it. She pulled away. "Cold." She said, looking up at him, her dark eyes seeming to stare into his soul. "Cold, daddy."

"Devon," He insisted again, gazing down at her curiously. He didn't jave the mental ability to show much fear towards her, didn't know what she was. Sharp, canine teeth could be seen just past his lips, comfortable in this form, and he sat down, touching the water with a finger. His bleeding arms were hurting, but he had grown used to it by now.

Charlotte climbed into his lap as soon as he sat down, pulling his other arm across her. She hugged her doll tight, looking out across the water. "You don't love me, daddy." She said, then began to cry, her tiny body shaking. She hugged her doll tighter, pulling her knees up to her chest. She looked down at the water, picking up a rock and dropping it in. She seemed to forget about Devon, and was instead trying to hit the mermaid on the head with the rocks. She dropped another one in, then another and finally grew frustrated, throwing one in as hard as she could. "Die!" She told it, dropping another rock in, her eyes narrowed as she leaned dangerously over the edge.

Devon snatched her arm absently as she leaned over. "Devon," He whispered under his breath. "Not, daddy," The words seemed final, though void of emotion as he gazed across the water, hadn't moved his other arm from around her, barely phased by the blood he was loosing. He laid backwards, collapsing in the soft grass and pulling her with him, pointing at the sky. "Stars.." His stomach growled and he frowned.

She felt herself being pulled down next to him. She didn't understand why he insisted on being called Devon. Maybe he wasn't her daddy. She heard his stomach growl and pulled on his arm. "Eat it." She said, pointing to the water, telling him to eat the mermaid under the surface of the water. "Kill her and eat her." She said, crawling back over to the edge of the lake. She dropped another stone, but the mermaid seemed not to notice. "WHY WON'T SHE DIE?!" She screamed, collapsing near the edge of the water in tears.

Devon stared at her curiously, looking towards the mermaid. He flashed suddenly long fangs with a nasty hiss, eyes flashing inhumanly, watching the mermaid swim off. Teeth shrank to the size of a dogs again, and he stretched his torn wings for a moment, watching her before lying back down tiredky, blood loss taking a toll on him, draining his energy.
