Once, Myriad was a flourishing city on the Pacific coast of North America. Rapidly growing in wealth, influence, and opportunity, it seemed like the city could do no wrong. Then one morning, they woke up and there was a wall around the city. A great iron wall, too smooth and too high to climb. Hours later, people started dying. The adults were the first to be hit by the respiratory disease. Slowly, painfully, their ability to breathe dwindled and then vanished. Residents quickly realized what was going on--they were being exterminated. But the disease failed--it only affected adults, over the age of nineteen. When the Outside government realized this, they decided to use Myriad as a "dumping site" for troubled youths--teenagers that nobody wanted to deal with. Occasionally, people dressed in white would come down in helicopters and steal teens, who would never be seen again. The teens of the city renamed it Jettison, and the Outsiders dressed in white were known to them as the Corporation. The ever-present disease still kills off adults, and every Resident dies on their twentieth birthday. Even though food, clothing, and drugs are dropped into a fenced-off area behind the General Store on the first of every month, it's still difficult to survive in this diseased city of anarchy.
