Monroe groaned as the puppy started whining, nuzzling him and Zain in turn. Monroe picked it up, turning over onto his back.
"What's wrong, puppy?" He asked, sitting it on his chest. It tottered to his stomach where it curled up. He petted it gently, a yawn passing his lips. Monroe glanced back at the TV, Hitler having given way to the civil war. He picked up the remote, flipping through the channels.

Zain stretched as best as he was able to, drawing in a shallow breath and peering at Monroe through slitted eyes. He hid his face again after a moment, his smile. He was afraid of showing how much he cared. Afraid of being hurt again, of being lied to.

Monroe felt Zain move, and looked over. But his face was buried again, and Monroe assumed he was asleep again. He picked the puppy up, looking up at it. "He'd still be my favorite, even if he didn't give me you." He told the puppy and it wiggled. He laid it on his chest, hugging it gently.

Zain bit his lip at the words, smiled into the pillow and blanket again. He kept quiet, controlling his breaths in his feigned sleep, his body relaxed. He wanted to know if Monroe really meant it...

Monroe looked over at him again, making sure he was still asleep. The puppy nudged him with his nose and Monroe smiled. "He's starting to mean a lot to me.. What happens if I fall in love, puppy?" He asked, and it nudged him again. "I guess the way he makes my heart race and my stomach flip and my mind boggled.. Just means he can find someone else, right? That's what I'm scared of, I guess.. Not that I'm gonna love him, but that he's not gonna love me.." He chewed on his lip, his voice cracking. He sighed, petting the puppy gently. "Are you a boy or a girl? We gotta get you a name." He said, picking it up. "How about Captain? You like that?"

Zain drew in a breath, felt bad. He was the problem? But of course he was... Sex and drugs and partying.. He would be afraid of that too. He was afraid of that. He realized he was holding his breath and rolled over. "Captain's cute.." He mumbled absently, biting his lip as he opened his eyes to gaze at Monroe.

Monroe looked over, laying the puppy on him. The puppy curled up on his chest. Monroe felt bad, like he shouldn't have even said anything. The dog didn't care. Why should he admit hes falling for someone?
"I guess.. I just like boats is all." He shrugged, biting his lip. "I don't regret what I said. I really do like you.. A lot. And yeah, it scares me. But it's gonna. I've distanced myself from everyone for years.. It's hard to admit you like someone when.. when you're broken. You know it's not gonna amount to anything because you're stupid and broken. But you can't stop thinking about them and you can't stop your heart from beating too fast or the butterflies you get when you think of them.."

Zain let go of his lip as he listened, and he shook his head slowly. "You're as broken as I am... Maybe I don't know why, but I know you're not stupid." He kissed him softly on the lips, brushed a hand over his cheek. "I feel the same way... And you're right, it's fucking scray." He rested his head beside Monroe's, watching the little dog.

Monroe looked over at him, his blue-grey eyes closing at the kiss. He leaned closer, reaching over to touch his chest. "I just don't wanna end up.. Head over heels for you and crying on the sofa because you're in love with someone else.." He said quietly, following his gaze to the wobbly puppy. It yawned, then buried it's face in the blanket. It wiggled under it, walking in a circle until it started crying because it couldn't get out. "My dog's as ditzy as me." Monroe said with a chuckle.

He watched the puppy move under the blankets, and laughed at Monroe's comment, reaching to help guide it back out.
